The invasion had begun sometime in the wee hours of the morning. Menuet was awoken by the noise of people shouting in Booty Bay. She could hear Common and the gutteral languages of the Horde mixing together in a symphony of shouts. She rubbed her eyes, blinking to look out her window. Things had never been so crazy.
People in armor were running everywhere. Shouts, screams and orders were being thrown about. Goblins worked overtime to bring out supplies, weapons and new armor. The auctioneers were working double time, selling items from the Horde and Alliance alike. No sooner did something come up on the block and it was taken off to the highest bidder.
She frowned, wondering what on earth was going on. Menuet bathed and dressed quickly, walking outside in common clothes. She stared at a Warrior downstairs in the Old Port Authority, bargaining with the leather merchant for hides. He was in full armor and had his sword strapped to his back.
"What is going on?" she asked.
"No time for talking Miss. There's a war." he answered her quickly, moving Menuet aside.
She bristled, straightening her shoulders, "I'm a Priest at the top of my training, soldier." her last word was said with a bit of venom taking an example from Rollandren when he spoke to troops, "And I have a commendation from Stromgarde. Now I'm asking again what is going on?"
The Warrior's eyes flashed and he stuttered over his words for a moment, "Oh ahhh sorry Miss..or Priest.." he nodded curtly, saluting her. Menuet frowned at the salute, not deserving that type of respect, "The scourge. They've invaded. You had better get ready for battle, Miss. They'll call for you soon."
Her eyes grew wide, hearing the words come out of the man's mouth. This could not be...John was right. He had been talking about it for weeks now but, Menuet passed it off as the talk of a man a bit touched. Poor John was devestated when the scourge was here before and, it left him a little off. All of the ranting about a battle coming seemed like banter from a militaristic Paladin. How could she not have listened to him or Ekrem?
Menuet thanked the Warrior, flying upstairs to her loft and grabbed her robes, enchanted cloth pants, crown and the rest of the cloth she wore for battle. She pulled her bracers over her wrists and fumbled into the gloves. Her staff was grabbed from the resting place near her bed and Menuet hastily grabbed her elven forged dagger, throwing it into the bag with the scepter gifted to her in Stromgarde.
She ran to the gryphon master, waiting in line for a flight to Stormwind. The minute she took off, Menuet turned on the buzzbox, "What is going on?"
Ekrem's voice crackled over the buzzbox and a simple answer came through, "Welcome to the war, Menuet."
She could not believe what she was hearing. Menuet switched channels, looking for two specific people. She got ahold of Nocturna. The strong Hunter was busy running to Tanaris and Aricia seemed to be leaving Stormwind, heading towards Kalimdor herself. The three decided to pull together, rallying in Gadgetzan.
As the gryphon turned to go to Stormwind, Menuet was choked by a thick fog. She peered through it, squinting and held onto the gryphon, who was moving about trying to get his bearings. Suddenly, Menuet screamed as the gryphon almost ran head-on into something large and grey. The gryphon dropped fast, almost turning his beak straight to the ground. She shut her eyes, hanging onto the poor bird for dear life until he straightened himself.
Her head turned, wide-eyed she stared back at what they had ran into. It was a floating castle, peppered with grey skulls and oozing a green substance from it's walls. Underneath it hung a large green crystal from a sinister chain. The crystal would collect an eerie green light and shoot a bolt of purple/black into the horizon.
Shivers ran through Menuet's spine as she landed, hurrying to grab some final supplies and head to Kalimdor. Stormwind was not the normal city today. Everyone was prepared for a battle. Skeletons littered the streets and orbs of dead spectral beings smoked indicating the beings were recently dead.
Her immediate thoughts turned to one person. Griffin. Her son was with his Father and his wife and daughter. Menuet had been in contact with them since the beginning. Andrew was busy finding a safe place for his children and wife. Menuet entrusted him with Griffin for now, assuring him she would join them soon.
The scene in Kalimdor was no different. Aricia and Nocturna were still on their way so, Menuet decided do explore. The same thick fog that choked her in Stormwind was present just outside of Gadgetzan. Many people were riding towards yet another floating crystal hanging dangerously low to the ground.
Menuet rode towards it, slowing Chaos to a walk approaching it slowly. A Forsaken was on his skeletal horse approaching with the same caution. Normally, Menuet would never look sideways at one of them. She would just pass them by. Today though, she looked at the Forsaken and saw his face.
The expression came through his hollow orbs that were once eyes and skin crinkled around his forehead. He was afraid as he stared at the crystal. The expression of a deep sadness came over him as if he remembered whatver life it was he lived before the plague may have taken him a first time. The Forsaken swallowed and an adam's apple that was half exposed moved up and down.He let out a hacking sigh and turned to Menuet, still holding the same expression.
For the first time in her life, Menuet looked a Forsaken in the eyes without malicious intent. Normally, she would look in their eyes right before taking them in Arathi Basin. This time, there was no anger or disgust on her face, there was a hint of compassion in her eyes and a relaxed composure. Menuet simply nodded to the Forsaken in understanding averting her eyes to the crystal.
He sighed again, moving his skeltal horse to fall along side Menuet's. The two walked in sync together for a moment, watching the crystal gather an eerie green light. A black bolt shot out of the crystal, landing near the two and a circle of odd runic symbols appeared. Menuet stopped, staring at the circle in the distance. The Forsaken did as well and once again the expression covered his face as he looked to the Human.
She swallowed hard, dipping her head to the Forsaken. He returned the nod, moving his hands in a gesture Menuet did not understand. The expression on his face said it all and Menuet said quietly, "I know...I know."
The Forsaken's lips curled back from his teeth, forming a macabre smile at Menuet. Another Forsaken arrived on his horse, looking at the first one. The second Forsaken stared at Menuet for a long moment, feeling the almost reverent silence between the two. He looked to his friend, speaking in a gutteral language. They exchanged quiet words, gesturing to each other.
Finally the second Forsaken's horse fell along side the first. He looked over to Menuet and nodded, she returned the nod with a slight smile. The invasion had broken the barriers between Horde and Alliance - at least for now. Forsaken and Human stood together staring in disbelief at a threat on life itself.
The three stood there for a long while side by side, staring at the crystal. Finally the two Forsaken turned their mounts one way, both giving Menuet the same macabre smile and a nod. She waved in return , smiling softly and Menuet turned around in time to see Nocturna on her sabre, and Aricia on her mare, riding towards her.
Nocturna eyed the Forsaken duo and looked at Menuet, "What did they want with you?"
Menuet shrugged, "Reassurance..." and she dug her heels into Chaos, riding towards the floating castle with Nocturna.
